San Diego Derby Dolls Bout Recap 4/19/08 - by Mr. Rocker

Bout 1: Ventura County Roller Girls vs. San Diego Derby Dolls

The bout between the Ventura County Roller Girls and the San Diego Derby Dolls promised to be exciting, and by all accounts it was. The night started out with CN Enemy going down hard on the first jam, and this seemed to galvanize the Dolls into action, and set the tone for what would be a hard-fought and physical match. Early on, # 33 Cherry Punch delivered a hard blow to VCDD’s jammer Fox Force 5 to keep her from breaking out of the pack, although later in the jam she did get through for VCDD’s first point of the match. The SDDD put the slam down hard on VCDD however, and by with 11:00 minutes on the clock the score was already 13:1 SDDD. By halftime the score was 30:14.

As the buzzer buzzed for the second half, the VCDD appeared to be approaching the rink with renewed vigor, but this ambition was short-lived as the SDDD continued their dominance of the track. One particularly well-orchestrated moment came early on, when Moto Mayhem and PT Bruiser held down the front while Anna Nutherthang mixed up the middle which allowed Aunt Flo to shoot through the pack, and even though she didn’t take lead jammer it was a perfectly executed maneuver. VCDD wouldn’t take that laying down, so the seemed to decide if they couldn’t match the SDDD in scoring they would try to match them physically, which resulted in a number of penalties and lost jammers. With one minute to go, the score was 66-43 SDDD, and that’s where it would stay, despite the best efforts of Ventura County .

All in all, the San Diego Derby Dolls were victorious because they played smarter, played harder and played better than the opposing Ventura County Derby Dolls. Blocking was outstanding, jammers knew their angles and their speeds, and even in the face of extreme physicality and determination, your SD Derby Dolls were victorious.

Bout II: Orange County vs. San Diego Derby Dolls

The San Diego Derby Dolls seemed energized by the results of the previous match up, and they appeared to take on the formidable Orange County Roller Girls with renewed and refreshed vigor. Right from the start the physicality that played such a crucial role in the first bout took hold, with Bonnie D. Stroir #26 taking the lead jam in the first match as OCRG tumbled straight into the crowd. The OCRG stepped it up to match the Dolls, but strong blocking by Cool Hand Lou, Isabelle Ringer, Slamuri and Bully Julie allowed Steely Jan to leap out into first position to make the score 13-6 by jam 6. This domination would only increase to the point where the Dolls lead 33-13 by the end of the first half.

Taking a page from their Ventura County sisters, the OC Roller Girls decided to step up the physicality in the second half in the hopes that sheer brute force would provide them the means to top the nimble and resourceful Derby Dolls. Unfortunately (for the Roller Girls) this tactic would prove as fruitless as before. Even when the Dolls fielded fewer skaters due to penalties the OCRGs couldn’t catch up. In fact, the blocking and assisting of the Dolls was so solid Bonnie D. Stroir #26 took to skating backwards. With two minutes to go in the second half, the score was 63- 50; certainly not insurmountable, but the Dolls stepped it up once again to maintain their dominance of the rink, with top-rate blocking and assisting provided by Lemon Drop and Bully Jully combined with spirited jamming by Isabelle Ringer boosted the Dolls to a triumphant 74-53 victory.

The physicality of the Orange County Roller Girls was more than countered by the quick-thinking blocks and assists of the San Diego Derby Dolls. Even though the OCRGs played hard, their eventually downfall was they lacked the speed, agility and tactics of the SDDDs. The synchronism of the blocks, whips and jams of the entire team lifted the Dolls to victory and showed that smart playing beats playing hard.
